The Future of Work is Here: Modern Desktops

Cloud adoption is soaring and shows no signs of slowing down. On average, 92% of organisations host at least some of their IT environment in the Cloud. Modern desktops are now the way forward in our ever-growing, Cloud-reliant workforce. In order to remain competitive, you need to ensure your employees are equipped with the right tools and solutions for virtual working.

What is a Modern Desktop?

A modern desktop (sometimes referred to as a virtual machine/desktop) is any physical device (laptop/desktop/mobile) or virtual machine (Windows 365 or Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) that runs Windows 10/11 and Microsoft 365 productivity under the management of Microsoft Intune - a cloud-based endpoint management solution.

Microsoft offers two key modern desktop solutions: Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365. Azure Virtual Desktop is optimised for maximum flexibility; it provides employees with greater control over their modern desktop environment via unlimited and unrestricted access to their desktop from any compatible device. Windows 365 is designed for simplicity, built to be user-friendly and easy to operate, and permits a remote workforce to stream personalised apps, data, content and settings from the Cloud to any PC device and fit unique business needs to support operations.

Each modern desktop has its own central processing unit (CPU), memory, network interface and storage created on separate host devices. As each host device can hold multiple modern desktops, it’s easy to scale as your business grows. Additionally, using software to carry out operations in the Cloud, rather than a physical computer, a modern desktop grants users unrestricted access to their unique desktop environment from any location, at any time, regardless of the endpoint device being used.

Business Benefits of Modern Desktops

Modern desktops harness the power of the Cloud to bring many benefits to businesses and end-users alike. These include:

Improved Productivity

Windows 11 greatly improves productivity, with an impressive 81% of surveyed SMBs believing that it increases employee efficiency and effectiveness. Additionally, when running Windows 11 on a modern desktop, your employees can work from anywhere via the Internet, facilitating a more flexible, remote working infrastructure and enabling them to tailor their working style to their own preferences with maximum productivity.

Enhanced Security

With a modern desktop, you can benefit from Microsoft’s sophisticated security and compliance functions such as Microsoft Defender - an advanced antivirus and malware protection software designed to protect, control and defend your workforce in today's cyber security environment. Additionally, modern desktops make regular copies of their operations history, meaning that in the event of a data breach or attack, your data is stored safely and easily retrievable.

Reduced Costs

With the ability to run multiple modern desktops on the same hardware, you can reduce overheads and minimise the cost of managing on-premises infrastructure.
