IT Industry Secret - BTA vs. Other IT Companies

This is a little secret about how most IT companies really make their money.  We will cover the three main types of IT companies and what you can expect out of them.


The Pay-By-The-Hour Company

In the IT Industry, we call this the 'break-fix' practice. That's because this type of company bases the majority of their income on the fact that your technology will break, and you will pay them to fix it. These companies usually charge per hour for support, or perhaps offer a discount with blocks of prepaid time. Their engineers come to your office to solve a specific computer issue. These on-site engineers are expensive, and the company they work for often has expectations regarding the amount of billable time they need to have. It is a fairly standard practice for the engineer to manage his or her own time; and they are responsible for producing their own billing, which is then reflected in their pay. In a situation like this, the engineer wants to complete the task quickly and move on to the next client to rack up enough billable hours to make their boss happy. This means they don't spend the time needed to resolve other issues or run maintenance on systems that will minimise future downtime and ensure that the infrastructure is running smoothly. There is no motivation for them to show anyone in your organisation how to resolve even a simple problem (rebooting a router for example) because that means one less billable call in the future. Plus, answering questions and checking into other issues might reduce the billable visits the engineer could get in the coming weeks. This method works well enough for residential users with computer troubles, but if you are trying to run a business, this is not the way forward.

With this type of support you end up paying for the engineer to come out time and time again, and for the lost productivity of the employee(s) who couldn't work due to the issue. It is not in their interest to keep a problem fixed.


The "Preventative" Maintenance Company

Some IT companies might offer to do regular preventative maintenance when visiting their clients, or they schedule these visits on specific dates and times. This is so the engineer can fill up their day with as many on-site client visits as possible.  When the engineer visits your office, they usually have a block of time to complete a series of proactive maintenance tasks to keep your IT running well.  This sounds pretty good so far, right? Unfortunately, the engineer usually doesn't have the flexibility to go over the allotted time, even if badly needed, and if he does you pay additional fees.  Moreover if the engineer finishes the tasks early, he or she will likely just find other things to do to fill the block of time, or even worse, just move on to the next client.  You will still pay whether you get your hour or if it only takes them 15 minutes.
